“After four years of participating in the Discussion Method at ϲ, of speaking on difficult topics in front of others, I have gained so much confidence and humility,” says alumnus Paul Habsburg (NE’24), who is currently interning with the Sovereign Order of Malta at the United Nations in New York City. “For me, I think TAC was the ideal preparation for this kind of job.”

Upon graduation from the New England campus this past spring, where he presented his class’s Senior Address, Mr. Habsburg began a one-year internship for the Sovereign Order of Malta, a humanitarian Catholic lay order dedicated to serving the poor, the sick, and victims of war and catastrophes. The Order has a permanent mission at the United Nations, where it is recognized by 114 countries and works to maintain international diplomatic relations, providing aid to communities worldwide.

“Recently, the Order has been doing what it can for Gaza and the Middle East,” Mr. Habsburg says. “It’s very difficult to get any food or medication there, as official governments are not able to intervene and help provide supplies to the people. However, since we are a humanitarian organization, we have been able to make a few big shipments with basic necessities and food to those in Gaza.”

In the past few months of his internship, Mr. Habsburg has sat in on many UN committee meetings and reported on them for the Order. He also writes statements for these committees and has even presented a few himself. (See one in the viewer, above.)

“In October, I gave three statements for the Order for the first time,” he says. “Even though it was daunting to be the one representing the Order in front of representatives from all over the world, it was a very exciting high point of my experience so far.”

As a new graduate of the College, Mr. Habsburg finds ample use for the critical thinking skills and foundational knowledge he acquired over four years. “Very regularly, I have a conversation or hear about an issue that I am able to understand so much better because of what I learned at the College, especially in Philosophy and Seminar,” he explains. “I also gained a good spiritual grounding, which really prepared me to work in this largely secular, geopolitical environment. This is very interesting, humbling work, and I am blessed to be able to do it.”
