Fr. Sebastian’s homily focused on the miracle of our existence — that God chose each and every one of us who is alive, at every turn, through our ancestors, providence, and grace. He has called each of us by name. Nourished in word and Sacrament, the group then returned to campus, some speedily running the downhill route to reunite with their peers at a picnic lunch.

The day’s next big event was the Summer Program Volleyball Tournament, which took place on the courts inside the Pope St. John Paul II Athletic Center as well as on the sand courts outside. Prefect-led teams went head-to-head in a gauntlet of teamwork and focus. Round after round saw one team take a step forward in the competition. After persevering through all odds, the team led by Tomas Diaz-Bonilla’s (’26) stood tall, emerging as top among the students — only to then fall in back-to-back bouts against the faculty squad.

For dinner, the program enjoyed barbecue chicken in St. Joseph Commons, after which it set out on a Rosary walk down to the campus’s Lourdes Grotto.

All then convened in St. Cecilia Hall for the highly anticipated Open-Mic Night. The audience — many present performing in turn — enjoyed music pieces, poetry, dance, original compositions, skits, and even gymnastics! Applause rose after each performance, some garnering a standing ovation. The Open-Mic Night concluded with an electrifying a cappella rendition of “Hallelujah.”

To round out the night, then students enjoyed some freshly popped popcorn, then settled into their seats for a screening of the film Cinderella Man on the Fritz B. Burns Auditorium’s big screen. When the credits rolled, the programmers called it a day, returning to their residence halls for final socializing and rest.
