Students say goodbye

Waking up groggy after little, if any, sleep following a night of dancing and farewells, students on the New England Great Books High School Summer Program began departing campus as early as 3:30 this morning to make their flights home. Shuttles ran back and forth to Boston and Hartford airports, dropping off programmers according to their flight times. Some stayed for Mass and brunch, and as local parents trickled in to come pick up their children, prefects and students tearfully exchanged phone numbers and hugs.

Though many found it hard to leave behind the friends and a life they have grown to love over these last two weeks, they departed with lasting memories of great classroom conversations, bonding activities, epic excursions, and a beautiful community united in the Catholic faith. 鈥淚 think what I鈥檒l miss the most about being here is the people,鈥 reflected programmer Christina E.

The prefects had a fantastic two weeks, as well, and noticed that these programmers were especially intelligent, talented, and caring. 鈥淭hese kids are super smart,鈥 said Anne Berquist (鈥23). 鈥淚t鈥檚 sad to see them go now, but I hope to see some of them again!鈥 A tremendous thank you to the parents, who raised such amazing children and gave us the opportunity to get to know them!

Thank you, also, to the New England Summer Program prefects, who worked all day every day to create a loving environment, execute activities, and make sure all the programmers were having a great time. This program could not have happened without them, and they deserve so much praise 鈥 and a good night鈥檚 sleep!

Finally, we must acknowledge the two students whose long hours and hard work have made this blog possible: writer/reporter Camden Tuffile (鈥24) and photographer Tam Nguyen (鈥25). They have done a beautiful job bringing the program to life and shedding some light on the treasure that is 黑料不打烊. Thank you, Cami and Tam!
