Today鈥檚 cool morning air was a great relief from yesterday鈥檚 beating sun. After last night鈥檚 break from the books to practice swing dancing, students on the New England High School Summer Program turned their minds back to their studies this morning after breakfast.

For the day鈥檚 only class, the programmers read S酶ren Kierkegaard鈥檚 Fear and Trembling, which considers four dramatizations of the story of Abraham and Isaac to contemplate the greatness of Abraham鈥檚 faith. Tutors challenged Kierkegaard鈥檚 position, leading students to ponder what made Abraham so great in Kierkegaard鈥檚 eyes.

Sections considered Kierkegaard鈥檚 four retellings of the trip to Mt. Moriah, where Abraham intended to sacrifice Isaac as the Lord had commanded. 鈥淓ach of the four stories had some failing in either Abraham or Isaac,鈥 said attendee Mary B. 鈥淏ut those failings aren鈥檛 present in Scripture, and so it seems to highlight how great Abraham was.鈥 But Kierkegaard鈥檚 admiration for the patriarch鈥檚 faith verges on the extreme. 鈥淗e talks about Abraham鈥檚 faith as thought it was unreasonable,鈥 said Naomi P. 鈥淗e used the word 鈥榩reposterous,鈥 as though that was what made it so great.鈥

Students will continue to ponder that seeming conflict between faith and reason later in the Summer Program, but today they are taking a break from the usual two-class schedule, clearing the afternoon for a day trip to Boston! Students and prefects gathered in Gould Hall after class, where they played foosball and chatted while waiting for the buses to arrive to ferry them to 鈥渢he Cradle of Liberty鈥.
